Making Beautiful Communities, One Garden At A Time

Dad Approved Gifts from Roger Reynolds Nursery

Father’s day is Sunday, June 16. If the father in your life enjoys gardening then Roger Reynolds Nursery is the place to shop for his special gift.

Here are four ideas for Father’s Day guaranteed to bring a smile.

Butterfly Bushes – Fun for the Family

Butterfly Trees, or Buddleias, are a favorite of nectar sipping insects due to the abundance of nectar and scent they create, so they attract any nearby butterflies all summer long.

What fun for the entire family to have beautiful butterflies flitting around your garden.

Children of all ages love the show. The long colorful flower stalks, up to 12″ long, are a pleasure to look at, and right now we have a selection of some unusual colors. Choose from white, red, pink, blue, and purple.

Some varieties of Butterfly Bushes can grow to tree size so be sure to talk to our staff about your space requirements. Recent breeds will grow to no more than 2-3 feet in height but some varieties can grow up to 100 feet in height.

Buddleias prefer sun and well-drained soil. They bloom all summer long. Once established they need only minimal watering and less fertilizing produces more blooms. Buddleias are perfect for lower-maintenance gardens.

Buddleias are not bothered by most common garden pests.

Come in soon for best selection.

Encore Azaleas – Keep Right On Blooming

People who adore spring blooming azaleas can now enjoy an explosion of color season after season. Encore Azaleas are the only patented brand of azaleas to bloom in the spring, summer and fall.

Once the “first act” of blooming concludes in the spring, new shoots begin to grow and set buds. The Encore Azalea’s “second act” opens when these buds begin blooming into full flower mid-summer. This unique bloomseason continues through the fall, the curtain dropping with the onset of cold weather.

But, the show goes on. As an “encore”, these exceptional azaleas flower again with traditional spring azaleas and the process starts over.

Evergreen Encore Azaleas enjoy more sun than traditional azaleas, but offer the same easy care.

We have Encore Azaleas in a variety of traditional and unusual colors.

May Gardening Tips

May Gardening Tips

We are having unusually warm weather this spring. Take advantage of it by following these May gardening tips.

  • With hot weather comes an increased need for water. Try deep watering in the evening to reduce the evaporation from the mid-day sun.
  • Don’t forget to add mulch to cover your garden beds. Mulch helps control weeds while it retains moisture in the soil.
  • Now is the perfect time to get in your summer annuals. In the shade try coleus, begonias and impatiens. Sun loving plants include alyssum, marigolds, lobelia, zinnias, dahlias and cosmos.
  • Don’t forget to protect young plants from slugs and snails. Check with our staff for the safest and most effective products for your needs.
  • You can sow seeds for flowers such as sunflowers, marigolds, zinnias and cosmos directly into your garden and should see sprouts in a week to 10 days.
  • Fruit trees may need extra watering to guarantee sweet and juicy fruits by autumn. Don’t forget to fertilize citrus and other fruit trees and vines this time of year for best results.
  • Now is a good time for planting decorative and fruit trees. The warm weather and extra sun will get them off to a good start.
  • Plants not looking healthy? Bring in a sample leaf and we will find the right solution for the problem.
  • Most lawns could use some care this time of year. Aerate and fertilize for a lush lawn the rest of the year.

Don’t Forget to Water

Start watering

We’ve had a dry year. We are not experiencing typical winter weather for our area. Many plants are starting to suffer.

While most large shrubs, deciduous trees and drought resistant plants are fine many others are feeling stress.

Roger Reynolds Nursery suggests that you start irrigating if you want to maintain the health of your water loving plants such as citrus, camellias, azaleas, small shrubs, annuals and roses.
