Roger Reynolds Nursery is a family-owned, independent garden center. The Nursery is owned by Sally Halstead, a third generation grand-daughter of the business founder. Sally has been the proprietress since 1978.
The Nursery was founded in 1919 by Roger Reynolds. Roger had been trained as a commercial printer in San Francisco where he opened a shop at the turn of the century. Unfortunately, he developed an allergy to printing ink requiring him to redirect his career to a line of work where he would have ample fresh air and plenty of outdoor activity. The retail nursery industry certainly made great sense.
Roger acquired 18 acres of beautiful, pristine land on the San Francisco peninsula in the community of Menlo Park. Today’s Nursery sits on the same location where he launched his new venture, a retail nursery. Although he knew nothing about horticulture, it has been said that he took every customer inquiry and turned it into a learning experience.
It wasn’t long before his entrepreneurial spirit took hold and he expanded his original nursery to include a recreational park which he rented to various San Francisco organizations that wanted ”a day in the country.” He built barbecues, picnic tables, and even a dance floor complete with a “jukebox.” It was a huge success.
Today the Nursery sits on nearly 2 acres where one can experience the peace and tranquility of the by-gone era.
Ms. Halstead has insisted on following the legacy of her grandfather … provide only the best quality product and service, offer a fair value, and maintain a meandering garden of beauty that all can enjoy.
